Solar passive design is one foundation of my approach, and drives the planning and forms of my design. Simply put, solar passive design is about keeping the sun out when the weather is hot, and letting it stream in when the weather is cold, but through this technical approach, my focus is on the enjoyment and comfort it creates. Whether it’s enjoying a mug of hot soup on a cold clear winters day bathed in the incredible warming sun in your living room, or sheltering from a sweltering 40 degree day with no air conditioning required, it’s these joyous experiences that are only appreciated once they become part of your everyday life.

Complementing this is the opening up of the house through a seamless connection to outdoor spaces that I strive for as well. Opening up the house to allow cooling breezes to flush it out is a further joy. The Australian lifestyle, especially BBQing and outdoors entertaining is facilitated through convenience connection of kitchen to outdoor cooking areas is another. From wood fire pit / BBQs, smokers to pizza ovens, how their operation and connectivity to the can be make their use easy is considered. What can I say… I love to cook and stare into camps fires, so allowing this in me personal houses allows me and my family to escape even when when we can’t get away!

My approach starts through a process of understanding: how you live; how you want to live; what do you need, and; what do you want? It continues with an in-depth analysis of what your site has to offer or what challengers it possesses (such as planning controls) that need clever solutions, all informing your brief so this formative document has a grounding in the 3 factor realities (Cost - Quality - Size) and the sites opportunities and constraints to allow design to start fully informed of the best construction pathway to suit your budget.
